Inverugie Castle ruins in Aberdeenshire. The Cheyne family constructed the first castle, a timber motte-and-bailey building, in the 1100s.

Ricardus de Chenai saw Hucredus filius Fergus give something to the Hospital of St. Peter of York between 1158 and 1164.

Inverugie Castle was constructed by the Cheynes in the 12th century close to Peterhead.

Around 1200, William de Chesne saw a charter of William the Lion.

While William le Chen served the King overseas in 1230, he was protected.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, three members of the family, all named Reginald, occupied influential posts.

Margaret Chein acquired a charter from David II (coins from David II's reign are shown at the top) prior to 1370 for the estates of Strathbrook and half of Caithness.

Freskyn de Chen is listed as decanus Aberdonensis in 1321. Henry le Chen served as the bishop of Aberdeen for 46 years (1282–1328).

Sir Reginald de Chen requested 200 oaks from Edward I in 1305 so that he might construct his Dufhous estate.
