About Clan Borthwick

The Borthwick name probably comes from the old barony of Borthwick on Borthwick Water, Roxburghshire. A traditional origin story credits a Livonian knight, Andreas, who came to Scotland in 1067. Sir William Borthwick rose to prominence in Midlothian and the Borders, receiving a charter confirming the lands of Borthwick in about 1410, and the family became Lords of Parliament in the 15th century
