About Clan Buchanan
Clan Buchanan's origins are said to lie in a 1225 grant by the Earl of Lennox of lands on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond to a clergyman, Sir Absalon of Buchanan. Clan tradition also claims earlier descent from Anselan, described as a provincial king of north Ulster, who received the lands of Buchanan from Malcolm II for his services against the Danes. The Buchanans supported Robert the Bruce, aiding his escape in 1306, and the chief's arms are held to allude to the nearness of the chiefly line to the royal Stewarts through a marriage to Isobel Stewart
