The name is taken from the former barony of Byres in East Lothian and is also known as Byers and Buyers.
at 1309, John de Byres arrives at Neubotle as a monk. In 1392, Thomas de Byris had a tenement in Edinburgh; he was made a burgess of Aberdeen in 1534.
Between 1593 and 1653, George Byris and Thomas Byris served as Legertwood's ministers in Berwickshire.
In the seventeenth century, John Byres was a prominent businessman in Edinburgh who served as treasurer, guild dean, and provost.
Andrew Byers is listed as a burgess of Cupar in 1694.
